Strange Rocks - Cape Elizabeth Maine

Trip to Portlalnd Maine

Remembering how much she enjoyed walking on the rocks at Newport, RI last year, Cris and I took a short mid morning excursion to the Lighthouse at Cape Elizabeth.
Despite the sunshine, it was a bit windy and cold

 Petrified Wood?

I have never seen anything like it! When you walk on the rock formation at Cape Elizabeth you swear you are actually walking on a mammoth petrified tree. Only when I picked away a small chip could I confirm it was actually rock and not wood.

It turns this wood-like formation started as grains of sand eons ago but as continents and tectonic plates collided, these sands were compressed, heated and folded and later “intruded” by molten rock resulting in their present uncanny reemblance to wood.

It looked like an ancient shipwreck
